This island is located on the south west of Mexico, in the Caribbean Sea, about 50 kilometers from Cancún, and it's one of the 9 municipalities of Quintana Roo. Cozumel, from the Yucatecan Mayan, means "Land of Swallows". It's a paradisiac spot, about 18 kilometers from the Yucatan coast. It's about 32 miles long and 9 miles wide, and there's only one town on the island, San Miguel, with wonderful beaches, Mayan ruins, a big jungle and a good tourist infrastructure.

Cozumel is part of the magnificent Mexican Caribbean, and it's a place full of beauty and an important tourist destination of the Mexican Mayan Riviera. The water surrounding Cozumel is one of the best in the world for diving, the great transparency of its waters and the amount of coral species and exotic plants makes this island a pleasure to visit. It also has archeological treasures, a product of the Mayan culture.

Throughout the whole coast of the island there are many white sand beaches and turquoise colored waters of great beauty. To the west, there are some calm ones, and the east offers big waves and wind. To any of the cardinal points there are many good beach offers, you could choose the San Francisco beach to the south, with a mild swell and fine white sand, and enjoy the ride in glass bottom boats that wil let you admire the big coral banks, or the private Playa Bonita to the east, if you want to be far from the crowds.

As mosf of the Mexico beaches, Cozumel has a good infrastructure to receive tourists, you can find here all the commodities of a big tourist center, from several modest hotels to four star hotels for your choice.

The water sports are the big attraction of the island, being the most popular diving, kayaking and scuba diving. Many tourists also enjoy jetskiing, sailing, surfing, boogie boarding, windsurfing, etc. The most attractive places are the coral reefs, like Palancar. There, the transparency of the water provides up to 60 meters of visibility. Cozumel is considered one of the five best places of the world for scuba and snorkeling.
On the south coast of the island is the Parque Marino Nacional Arrecifes of Cozumel, where you can appreciate an incredible network of coral reefs. Other wonderful places are: The Chankanab Lagoon, which is a body of water connected with the sea by a subterranean tunnel, where you can admire the marine flora and fauna and the Parque Nacional Chankanab, with lots of corals and fish, mollusks and crustaceans.

The weather in Cozumel is tropical, hot most of the year, with an average temperature of 27ºC, so visiting Cozumel is possible any time.
